Christi MacPherson’s project “The Clootie Wells” is a series of documentary/landscape images that examine the Celtic phenomenon of Clootie Wells.  These are ancient, sacred wells found in Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Man.

These supposedly healing wells have been in use for thousands of years and the objects left there speak volumes of the people who left them there and the psychology of illness. From gallows humour to grief to hope; when looked at through the lens, these wells show the full spectrum of our hopes and fears for our health, and the tug of war between modern and ancient belief systems. More importantly though, these wells are an ancient and near constant outpouring of empathy and understanding going back thousands of years. Spend a little bit of time there and it’s difficult not to be touched by the objects that others have left behind.

“The Clootie Wells” was shown at the LANDMARKS exhibition, which took place in March 2019 in the Patriothall Gallery, Edinburgh.

Christi MacPherson is a photographic artist based in Fife, Scotland. Most recently he has pursued a documentary/landscape style incorporating an absence of people, telling their stories through their surrounding environment and the objects left behind. He also has a profound love of portraiture and still-life work.

Christi has just taken part in the highly regarded LANDMARKS exhibition as part of the Transient Collective, a collective born out of a desire to promote connectivity between photographers across Scotland...

This was his 6th exhibition since finishing his photographic degree in Derby in the mid/late 90s, where he studied under John Blakemore, Paul Hill, Karen Knorr and Lynn Silvermann.

Since leaving art school, he has had solo shows in Inverness, Dunfermline; and Edinburgh. Christi also had an image from his previous project “The Bridges” shown in the Retina Scottish International Photography Festival in Edinburgh and most recently had an image chosen for the highly popular #PrintSwap event run on Instagram by Feature Shoot. This image was exhibited in Brooklyn, New York at the end of 2018.
