It is difficult for me to choose a feature image for this project, however this is one photograph that certainly stood out more than the rest when I was creating this work.

It marked a very significant point of the shooting process when I realised exactly what I wanted to capture. If I may explain, the majority of shooting that I did for this work was done by going back to places I remember from my childhood and adolescence. The stadium where this photograph was taken was one of them.

As I stepped into the grounds of this covered by snow, old and wrecked stadium surrounded by monuments of the Soviet time, I noticed that there was a team of young footballers training. What made the biggest impression to me was one boy, no older than fifteen years. During them running laps around the stadium, that boy preferred to run by himself rather than in the company of his team.

I overheard a conversation between that boy and the coach several minutes later. The coach was telling the boy off, emphasizing that he had been doing that systematically and that it would impact his team’s performance during matches. The boy stood there and didn’t make much of an effort to listen or even respond. The boy was in his own world, whatever that world might be. At least that is the impression I got by the way he was reacting.

That immediately got me thinking about myself when I was around the same age and in the same place, though in different circumstances and situations. I felt a very particular type of angst, one that only adolescents feel. That feeling was also surrounded by the same environment. The town, the buildings, the history and culture, the people and the time. I thought I had grown out of this feeling but clearly it was still lingering. It was that exact feeling that was perpetuating me to the completion of this project.

I realised quickly I wasn’t trying to reconnect with my town as a physical space but more like a place to grow and develop as an individual.  I concluded to myself I wanted to capture that exact feeling in my photography but through my most honest perspective. I can definitely say that this was the first time I was being completely honest with what I wanted to photograph.

Artist Statement:
I am a contemporary photographer, recently graduated from Solent University in Southampton, UK.

Deeply influenced by Surrealism, my work explores a delicate combination of memory and its projection while often incorporating aspects of documentary. What I photograph is the current state of subjects or the environment in order to mark a significant point in time, that the process of forming memories will otherwise amalgamate into a combination of images and emotions generated by ones perception. My work sits in the intersection between feelings and memories.

However I do also enjoy to experiment with abstract imagery where I utilise controlled lighting, the body, performance and movement to represent the amorphous nature of memories. I see them as something that is beyond physical. An ever-changing blur in our minds, where what we feel can be stronger than what we remember and thus as our feelings can change overtime, our memories follow.

In short, with my work I aim to understand the nature of memory by exploring my own memories, other people’s or a combination of both.
